The ending of your German ancestor's name may give you clues to where they were when they started using that surname. Ethnic Germans began using surnames in the 1400s.

November Meeting November 19

The November meeting has been moved one week earlier because of Thanksgiving. We will meet on Wednesday November 19 at St Luke's Lutheran Church (next to the Waukesha Public Library). There will be a short business meeting at 6:45 pm with sharing to follow. Members of our organization will share what then have been doing and their results. People can also ask for suggestions to help with their own work.

Genealogy Tip - Always Check the Back

When gathering information always check the back for more information. Whether it be a photo, tombstone, document, picture hanging on the wall or your grandfather's rocker always check for more information. When photographing or scanning an item create a note stating the pertinent information and that it is side one of two or side two of two. Place this note so that it is scanned or photographed along with the item. This will keep the two sides together.

If you can't find a female relative born in the 1880s, consider the fact that she was born after the 1880 census and may have been married with a new name before the 1900 census.

The  Wednesday July 23 WCGS meeting will be a 2014 - 2015 Planning meeting - no speaker.
All are welcome to join us in planning for the new year. The meeting will start approx. 6:30 pm at St Luke's Church ( next to the Waukesha Public Library) in the Library.

Each of our ancestors has a unique history. This history made them who they were and in turn has helped make us who we are.  Remember this as we celebrate July 4th.

Join us for Jovanka Ristic's presentation "AGS Library map collection - Putting Your Ancestors on the Map". The short business meeting starts at 6:45 PM. The program starts at 7:00 PM. When you receive communications, from any genealogy organization you belong to, always keep an eye open for surnames you are looking for. You may just find a cousin sitting next to you at a meeting.

Always remember to document your sources immediately. Document the sources for ALL finds and interviews, including internet finds.
